THE ESSENTIALS

  • Russia claimed to have repelled a Ukrainian offensive on a 95-kilometer front near Soledar in eastern Ukraine. But the figures given by Moscow seem fanciful for a counter-offensive, and Kiev claims an advance of 2 kilometers in Bakhmut.
  • A Mi-28 helicopter of the Russian army crashed Friday during training in annexed Crimea, causing the death of its two pilots, said the Russian Ministry of Defense, which says it favors the track of a technical failure.
  • Vladimir Putin and the South African president intend to "accentuate" their cooperation, according to the Kremlin. The statement comes at a time when the United States accuses South Africa of supplying arms to Moscow.
