UN renews call for immediate ceasefire in Sudan
Saudi Arabia invites Burhan to Arab summit, Jeddah talks resume tomorrow
Representatives of both sides in Sudan's conflict will resume talks on Sunday on how to implement plans for humanitarian aid delivery and the withdrawal of troops from civilian areas, a senior Saudi diplomat said.
The diplomat said on Saturday that the Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces delegations would remain in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah to begin the next phase of negotiations after agreeing on Thursday on a plan to protect civilians.
The Kingdom also invited the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, to the Arab League summit scheduled to be held in Jeddah on May 19.
In New York, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the signing by the parties to the conflict in Sudan of the "Jeddah Declaration" committing to the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Sudan.
"The Secretary-General welcomes the signing by the parties to the conflict in Sudan of the Jeddah Declaration and their commitment to protect civilians and ensure the safe passage of humanitarian aid in the country," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
"While humanitarian workers, especially local partners, have continued to deliver aid in extremely difficult circumstances, the Secretary-General hopes that this announcement will ensure that the scale of the relief operation can be rapidly and safely scaled up to meet the needs of millions of people in Sudan," Dujarric said.
The spokesman added that the UN Secretary-General renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and expanded discussions to achieve a lasting cessation of violence.
The spokesman stressed that the United Nations would spare no effort in assisting in the implementation of the Declaration and would continue to deliver humanitarian assistance both in the presence of a ceasefire and in the absence of it.
