Palestinian President arrives in New York to participate in the United Nations commemoration of the "Nakba"

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived Saturday in New York to participate in the United Nations' commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the "Nakba" of the Palestinian people, the presidency announced.

A presidential statement, published by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, said Abbas would deliver a speech at UN headquarters on Monday for the first time to coincide with the anniversary of the Nakba.

The United Nations commemorates the Palestinian "Nakba" through a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly at the end of last November.

This is the first time that the event will be held under the mandate of the General Assembly itself, and stipulated that May 15 of each year is designated as a day of commemoration.
