The former Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, is to become Ukraine's ambassador to Brazil. Brazil's Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Thursday that it had given its approval to the installation of Melnyk as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. A confirmation from Kiev was still pending.

The announcement came a day after Brazil's special foreign policy adviser Celso Amorim visited Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and with Melnyk, who is currently Ukraine's deputy foreign minister.
The meeting took place behind closed doors. Melnyk then said that "Brazil can play an important role in ending Russian aggression and achieving a lasting and just peace." Amorim had already met with Putin in Moscow at the end of March.
