Shortly before 20 p.m. on Tuesday, a catenary caught fire at the Manlleu train station in Catalonia, Spain. The fire broke out on top of a car carrying passengers. Panicked by the explosion sounds, they rushed out of the train, as evidenced by a video posted on TikTok, which has already been viewed more than 1.4 million times.

According to the administrator of railway infrastructure (Adif), the pantograph of a train of line R3 caused the fire of the catenary and a drop in electrical voltage, says La Vanguardia. During the incident, the Civil Protection activated the pre-alert of the Ferrocat plan after the halt of two convoys due to the breakdown. No injuries were reported.

'Necessary explanations'

All passengers were able to be directed to other train lines or other means of transport, said Renfe, the Spanish equivalent of SNCF. At a standstill since Tuesday evening, the line was restored this Wednesday morning.

La gent que fa servir rodalies cada dia ho sap millor que ningú, però les dades acumulades d'un any fan encara que obvious que la situació és inacceptable.

Following this incident, and while another one occurred last week, the Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Juli Fernàndez, said that "at least explanations are needed from the officials of Renfe, Adif and the ministry". He also assured that the government will present a disciplinary file for the many outages of recent days.
