The prefecture of Pyrénées-Orientales announced Tuesday the passage of most of the department in a situation of "crisis", the highest level of alert, because of the historic drought hitting this territory that extends from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coast.
Highlighting a "very exceptional rainfall deficit" and the low level of rivers, dams and groundwater, the prefect has tightened agricultural irrigation restrictions and banned the upgrading of swimming pools or the use of spas, measures that come into force Wednesday.
