A poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC revealed that former US President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden by seven percentage points in the general election race, as Trump received 49% to Biden's 42%.

According to Axios, 44 percent of American adults surveyed said they would inevitably or likely vote for Trump, compared to 38 percent for Biden, and 12 percent undecided. Biden's approval rating has fallen to a new low of 36%, compared to 42% in February.

Biden's re-election campaign is already trying to distract voters from their reservations about him, making the 2024 general election instead an option, not a referendum.

In terms of acumen, 94% of Republicans, 69% of independents, and even 21% of Democrats say Biden lacks the mental acuity to be president.

ABC polling director Gary Langer noted that "only 32 percent generally believe Biden has the mental acuity to function effectively as president, down sharply from 51 percent when he ran for president three years ago."

54% say they believe Trump has the mental sharpness required for it.

In terms of the physical health required for the presidency, only 33 percent of those polled believe that Biden, 80, enjoys it, compared to 64 percent for Trump, who is 76.

According to the poll, 58 percent of Democratic-leaning adults want someone else to nominate Biden.
