Mud swallows two villages: over 400 dead in Congo

Torrential rains trigger landslides and floods in the east of the African country

The images coming from Nyamukubi, a village in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo are terrible: hundreds of houses were swept away by landslides triggered last week by heavy rains.

Floods have engulfed the villages of Nyamukubi and Bushushu in Kalehe territory in South Kivu province. Rescuers dug with their bare hands in the mud to search for survivors and recover the bodies of the victims.

The death toll has risen to 401, local governor Theo Ngwabidje Kasi said Monday.

The central government sent a delegation to the affected region and declared today a day of national mourning.
