Expectations of Syria's return to the Arab League during its "ministerial" meeting today

Arab foreign ministers are expected to agree to Syria regain its seat at the league at their meeting on Sunday, an Arab League spokesman said, supporting regional efforts to normalize relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Gamal Rochdi, spokesman for the Arab League secretary-general, said the resolution was expected to be adopted at a closed-door meeting of foreign ministers at Arab League headquarters in Cairo.

Arab states are trying to reach consensus on the possibility of inviting Assad to an Arab League summit on May 19 in Riyadh to discuss the pace of restoring relations and the conditions for allowing Syria to return.

The meeting comes days after top regional diplomats met in Jordan to discuss a roadmap to return Syria to the league, while the conflict continues to calm down.

The Arab League has not issued a statement clarifying the conditions for Syria's return. However, experts said Saudi Arabia and the region likely prioritized issues related to stalled UN-brokered political talks.
