A 35-year-old man was tried Thursday for burning a French flag on the sidelines of the May 1 demonstration in Chambéry (Savoie). As reported by Le Dauphiné Libéré, flags had been stolen that day from the front of the prefecture.

One of them had been thrown into a pallet fire where there were already models representing Emmanuel Macron and Gérald Darmanin, according to our colleagues.

Six months suspended sentence

One of the leaders of this action was identified and arrested by the police. During his appearance in court, the thirty-year-old said he wanted to "have fun with the flags", evoking the effect of the crowd. According to him, his act would have no political significance. A video showing him throwing the flag into the fire, however, was published on an anarchist website.

The defendant was eventually given a six-month suspended sentence. He must also pay a fine of €400.
