Eight people were killed and thirteen wounded Thursday night in a shooting near the Serbian town of Mladenovac, about 60 km south of Belgrade, according to local media.

The gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon on a group of people from a moving vehicle and fled, according to public broadcaster RTS.

Police are searching for the suspect, she added. Many police and ambulances have been dispatched to the scene, and helicopters are flying overhead.

School Shooting

The shooting came a day after a 13-year-old student, eight children and a guard shot dead at a Belgrade school, a killing spree that shocked the country to the core. In April, a villager shot dead 13 people, including family members and neighbours, near Mladenovac.

Serbia is one of the countries in the world with the highest rate of firearms in the population, with almost 40 guns per 100 inhabitants.
