Lawmakers Yoon Kwan-seok and Lee Sung-man, who were implicated in the money envelope allegations at the
2021 Democratic National Convention, have announced their sudden withdrawal from the party.

The two lawmakers attended a closed-door meeting of the party's Supreme Committee and met with the leadership, including Representative Lee Jae-myung, before announcing their intention to leave the party.

The two lawmakers apologized for causing the scandal and said they would uncover the truth in the prosecution's investigation and trial.

[Rep. Lee Sung-man/MDP: I will do my best to get out of the party with Rep. Yoon Kwan-seok and uncover the truth through legal battles.]

Millennium Democratic Party chief spokesman Kwon Chil-seung said Lee Jae-myung expressed gratitude to the two lawmakers for announcing their intention to leave the party.

[Kwon Chil-seung/MDP Chief Spokesperson: You said a lot of things like sorry for not being able to work with us until the end, and you said those things to thank you for making a decision.]

The two lawmakers are accused of making and distributing envelopes of money during the 2021 Democratic National Convention with former MDP Vice Secretary General Lee Jeong-geun and former Korea Water Resources Corporation Auditor Kang Rae-gu.

Earlier, a transcript purportedly recorded by the former deputy secretary-general was released and caused quite a stir.

The two lawmakers plan to attend the Democratic caucus this afternoon to make their remarks.
