Boris Johnson arrested this weekend by the Dutch police? Yes and no. In the Netherlands, police arrested a man over the weekend who held a forged driver's license in the name of the former British prime minister.

The fake Ukrainian paper, "issued" in 2019 and valid until the end of the year 3000, included the name, photo, and date of birth of Boris Johnson, police said Monday. The document was found during an investigation into a drunken crash that occurred after midnight on Sunday, when a car crashed into a pole in the northern city of Groningen.

False papers easy to acquire in Ukraine

"Inside, the police found a fake driving licence belonging to Boris Johnson," said Thijs Damstra, spokesman for the police. "Unfortunately for this person, we did not fall into the trap," Groningen police joked on their Instagram account.

The car had been abandoned but police quickly found the man near the crash site. He could not identify himself and refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. The 35-year-old man was arrested. Police could not say where the fake permit was fabricated.

According to Kysia Hekster, a journalist with public radio NOS and a former correspondent in Russia, driving licenses could easily be purchased in tourist shops in Ukraine. "As far as I know, the real Boris Johnson was not in the Netherlands at the time," the police spokeswoman added.
