The firefighters of the Pyrénées-Orientales are determined not to find themselves destitute. While the department is in the grip of an extraordinary drought, they decided to take the lead and build up water reserves, reports France Info. The objective of the firefighters is to distribute these stocks in several places on the territory to be able to deal more effectively with future fires.

Thus, 900,000 liters of non-potable water will be set aside in tanks placed in fifteen different places. Winegrowers' cellars will notably accommodate these reserves. The huge fire that broke out in Cerbère (Pyrénées-Orientales) on April 16 has finally convinced firefighters of the need for such a device.

Driest April since 1959

This organization could prove all the more useful as April 2023 was the driest recorded in the department since 1959. It has now been nine months since any significant rainfall fell in the Pyrénées-Orientales, where many rivers have also dried up. This situation raises fears of the resurgence of fires.
