• The Occitanie region has launched the Occitanie Rail Tour, which allows travelers to embark on a tourist trip by TER, for ten euros per day.
  • For two to six days, it is possible to use unlimited use of the 19 regional railway lines, but also the regional coaches of the SNCF.
  • A cheaper and greener way to travel, the community is happy to say.

A road trip by train, anyone? The Occitanie region launches the Occitanie Rail Tour, a device that allows backpackers at heart to embark on a tourist trip, by TER, from the gorges of Allier to the beaches of Roussillon. For ten euros every day, travelers have the opportunity to use unlimited 19 regional railway lines, for two to six days, to discover Occitania differently.

And if that's not enough to reach the abbey or museum you dreamed of visiting, with this pass, it is also possible to climb on the regional coaches of the SNCF. The yellow train, the famous TER that criss-crosses the Pyrenees, is also accessible.

A cheap and ecological road trip

"At a time when tourism is criticized for its excesses, the Regional Committee of Tourism and Leisure (CRTL) returns, with this device, to the origins of leisure travel, as it was practiced in the nineteenth century," explains Jean Pinard, the director of this regional body. The Occitanie Rail Tour is "an initiatory and positive journey, adapted to the tastes of the day, and whose price and simplicity of use make it accessible to all", he continues.

It is also a way, notes Carole Delga (PS), the president of the region, to "fight against house arrest and allow as many people as possible to enjoy leisure or go on holiday", at a lower cost. "This is essential when we know that more than a third of French people do not go on holiday every year," says the elected official.

The Occitanie Rail Tour also has the advantage of offering yourself a trip, leaving a much smaller carbon footprint than when you travel through the region by car. Thanks to this device, it is possible, says the community, to make a complete tour of Occitania in five days, visiting Lourdes, Nîmes, the Pyrenees, and the Dordogne valley. But before going on an adventure, your bag on your back, you have to get organized: the dedicated website allows you to set up your road-trip before getting on the train.
