THE ESSENTIALS

  • On a visit to Ukraine, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas called on Monday to start negotiations this year on Kiev's entry into the European Union. In front of Volodymyr Zelensky, however, she admitted that it would be "a difficult process" and that Ukraine must "100% meet the conditions" set by the EU.
  • The remarks of the Chinese ambassador to France who, when asked about the Ukrainian province of Crimea, denied the sovereignty of the former Soviet republics, provoked an outcry among the states concerned. Lu Shaye was called a "parrot" and accused of making "Russian propaganda".
  • Emmanuel Macron said Monday that he would return to Ukraine "in the coming weeks" or "months", when it is the "right time". "Each time I made sure to have a useful approach, that is to say to be present in Ukraine to bring results or at moments that were decisive," he added, stressing that he had spoken again in mid-April with Volodymyr Zelensky.
