08:35: Zelensky, Macron discuss China and a summit for peace

Volodymyr Zelensky and Emmanuel Macron discussed Saturday the visit to China of the latter, whose recent remarks have sparked criticism in Europe and the United States, as well as "next steps" for a summit on peace.

The Ukrainian president also said he expressed his "gratitude" to his French counterpart for "condemning the terrible inhumane execution of a Ukrainian soldier by Russian war criminals". The alleged execution was revealed in a viral video showing a Russian-speaking man in uniform beheading with a knife a person who appeared to be a Ukrainian prisoner of war, images that caused shock and outrage in Ukraine and the West. Russian authorities said Thursday they were examining the footage to determine its authenticity.

08h20 : Welcome to this new Live

Hello everyone. As every day, the editorial staff of 20 Minutes is mobilized to give you the latest information on the conflict. Starting this Sunday, the heads of diplomacy of the G7 countries are meeting in the Japanese tourist city of Karuizawa. The talks will, unsurprisingly, be dominated by increasing pressure from China on Taiwan and the conflict in Ukraine.

In particular, the Japanese host of the summit will have the opportunity to stress his certainty that the Russian invasion only accentuates the need for increased vigilance in Asia. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, whose government approved a major revision of its defense doctrine in late 2022 in the face of China's rise, has repeatedly warned that "Asia could be the Ukraine of tomorrow."
