Weekend afternoon.

What used to be a peaceful retreat has turned into mayhem.

In the distance, amid a haze of smoke rising and a dizzying mix of cries from children and shouts from adults, people scramble to flee in their bathing suits.

Yesterday (7th) afternoon local time, gunmen stormed the water park of a resort in Cortazar, Guanajuato state, central Mexico.

The gunmen opened fire on dozens of holidaymakers, then smashed stores in the resort and seized security cameras before fleeing.

The attack killed seven people, including a 15-year-old child and three women, and seriously injured one.

The motive for the crime has not been determined.

Mexican troops and police are even using helicopters to pursue the fleeing assailants.

The state of Guanajuato is a place where gangs struggle for power for drug trafficking are fierce.

This is because it is a major transportation hub for both trains and roads leading directly to the U.S. border.

In the state of Guanajuato, gunmen stormed a bar in March, killing 7 people.
