A fifty-year-old died in the fire of an apartment in the center of Strasbourg and an 88-year-old woman was hospitalized in "absolute emergency", said Sunday the rescue and fire services of the Bas-Rhin. The fire, whose origin has not been specified, broke out in the late afternoon in a building in the Krutenau district.

"Two people were found in cardio-respiratory arrest, a 53-year-old man was pronounced dead and an 88-year-old woman was taken to hospital after resuscitation" in "absolute emergency," said the rescue and fire services in a statement.

"A dozen people were confined during the operations and five people were evacuated," they said. According to the regional daily Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (DNA), the two victims were in an apartment on the fourth and last floor of the building.
