Kennedy, 69, has earned a reputation as an environmental lawyer. Among other things, he campaigned for clean water, which led to a campaign to keep the Hudson River clean in New York. For years, however, he has damaged this good reputation by his vociferous appearance as an opponent of vaccination. He used to claim that vaccinations in children could cause autism – a claim that has long been refuted. In 2019, three family members published an opinion piece distancing themselves from Kennedy's views, and in 2021, his sister Kerry Kennedy called him "very dangerous."

In the corona pandemic, he and his claims became known to an even wider circle because Kennedy spread numerous conspiracy theories about the virus. He accused the then chief adviser to President Trump, Anthony Fauci, of profiting financially from corona vaccines together with the foundation of Bill and Melinda Gates.

He elaborated on this in a book in which he claimed that Fauci and Bill Gates, together with social networks such as Facebook, suppressed information about corona cures in order to make vaccinations appear as the only medicine. In the book, he calls Fauci "a powerful technocrat who helped orchestrate and execute the historic coup against Western democracy in 2020." Because of these activities, Facebook and Instagram have suspended the accounts of a group founded by Kennedy, and Instagram has also suspended Kennedy's personal account.

In January 2022, the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy even went so far as to compare the American vaccination campaign with the Nazi era. At that time, you could still flee to Switzerland or hide in an attic like Anne Frank. This is no longer possible. The Auschwitz Museum condemned the remarks on Twitter, and Kennedy's wife, actress Cheryl Hines, also spoke out against it. Two days later, Kennedy asked for forgiveness.

Kennedy hinted in March that he could run for the Democratic presidential nomination. At the time, he wrote on Twitter that his highest priority was to end the "corrupt fusion of state and economy that has ruined our country, destroyed the middle class, polluted our landscapes and waters, poisoned our children, and robbed us of our values and freedoms." He later told viewers in New Hampshire that he had already cleared the highest hurdle, namely that he had received his wife's permission.
