A severe storm uproots tents and topples buildings in Syria

A storm in Syria uprooted dozens of tents in northern Syria on Wednesday, leaving several injuries, collapsing buildings and walls and stopping navigation in Syrian ports.

Abu Mohammed al-Idlibi, a civil defence commander working in northern Syria, said, "Dozens of tents in camps scattered in rural Aleppo and Idlib have been uprooted, and four people have been injured by the fall of iron rods carrying tents."

"The area suffered significant material losses as a result of the storm and caused the uprooting of generating systems based on solar energy, which is the only source of electricity generation," al-Idlibi said in a statement to dpa news agency.

"A number of walls collapsed in the towns that were hit by the earthquake and the cracked buildings pose a danger to the people," al-Idlibi said.

In the city of Aleppo, a source in the Aleppo police confirmed "the collapse of a building in the radio neighborhood due to the storm, which is one of the buildings that were damaged by the earthquake, and it was reported that many walls collapsed in the neighborhoods of the eastern city of Aleppo and the people moved away from traffic in streets where there are cracked buildings."

The Syrian Ministry of Electricity announced a complete power outage in the province of Suwayda due to the fall of 7 electrical towers feeding the city of Suwayda, and that the Ministry of Electricity is working to restore the maintenance of high-voltage lines and restore electricity.

The Syrian Ministry of Transport announced this afternoon that the General Directorate of Ports is closing all seaports on the coastal strip except for the commercial port of Tartous due to the sea storm and the accompanying intensification of wind speed and high sea waves.

The Meteorological Directorate of the Syrian Army announced that "Syria will witness a polar depression of origin today, Wednesday, and that the wind speed exceeds 100 kilometers per hour at times."
