A 27-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison, including two years in prison, by the Criminal Court of Béziers. He was prosecuted for unintentional injuries by driver under the influence of alcohol (1.06 g / l of alcohol in the blood) and driving without a license. Arriving free at the court, he was imprisoned at the end of his trial, the court having issued a warrant of committal against him.

The accident occurred at dawn on December 4, 2021 in Béziers, on a departmental road towards Lignan-sur-Orb, returning from an evening with friends. The vehicle driven by the respondent had violently struck a plane tree before being struck by another vehicle. The passenger, owner of the vehicle, had been helicoptered to the University Hospital of Montpellier with a vital prognosis engaged. He suffers from severe neurological sequelae.

Six convictions between 2013 and 2018

"The defendant had explained, at first, that he was a passenger in the vehicle and that he had pulled his seriously injured friend from the cockpit, notes the public prosecutor, Raphaël Balland. However, DNA analysis and accident expertise had identified him as the driver. »

A repeat offender, he had already been convicted six times between 2013 and 2018, for driving without a license and without insurance. He is also obliged to work, take care of himself, compensate the victim and follow a road safety awareness course.
