An Italian woman, 64, hid the body of her deceased mother in a box for several months to continue receiving her pension, and the incident was revealed only after she died, according to local media.

The 64-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment in Paderno Dognano, a suburb of Milan, after neighbours told police they had not seen the woman in days.

Italian media, including ANSA, reported that as soon as they arrived at the house, police officers found the almost completely mummified body of her 90-year-old mother wrapped in "plastic food packaging tape."

The 64-year-old woman had told neighbours that her mother had moved to a nursing home in Verona, about 150 kilometres east of Milan. Police did not find the woman's name in the facility's residency records.

According to ANSA, the woman's death was not recorded, and her daughter, who has no source of income, was receiving her pension in a joint bank account. According to reports, both women died of natural causes.
