The surprises were limited. After the announcement of the nominations for the German Film Award 2023, the Netflix production "All Quiet on the Western Front", which recently won four Oscars, is the big favorite in the race for the Lolas. Edward Berger's adaptation of the novel by Erich-Maria Remarque received twelve nominations.

This is immediately followed by the film "The Teacher's Room" by İlker Çatak with seven nominations. The productions "Holy Spider", "Sun and Concrete" and "Sisi and I" each received four nominations. Among the nominees for the best film are also Fatih Akin's rapper film "Rheingold" and the adaptation of Joachim Meyerhoff's book "Wann wird es endlich wieder so, wie es nie war". The nomination for best film comes with a prize of 250,000 euros.
Leonie Benesch ("Das Lehrerzimmer"), Sandra Hüller ("Sisi und ich") and Tsar Amir Ebrahimi ("Holy Spider") can hope for a Lola for the actresses, Mehdi Bajestani ("Holy Spider"), Felix Kammerer ("Im Westen nichts Neues") and Charly Hübner ("Mittagsstunde"). This year's honorary award goes to director Volker Schlöndorff.
The German Film Award is endowed with a total of almost three million euros. The award ceremony will take place on 12 May in Berlin. In the run-up, however, it had caused some irritation that neither Christian Petzold's "Red Sky" nor Lars Kraume's "The Presumptuous Man" had made it into the preselection. And one can think about the verdict of the more than 2,000 Academy members when Petzold's film is not only invited to the Competition at the Berlinale, but also wins the Grand Prix of the Jury in the end. Swarm intelligence is probably something else.
