In five years, it will be possible to fly electric aircraft on certain shorter routes in Sweden, for example between Stockholm and Visby. That's what the airline SAS is planning.

"They should be operational by 2028. It is, in a sense, tomorrow. There will be smaller planes with 30 seats with up to 400 kilometers of range," says SAS CEO Anko van der Werff.

SAS is collaborating with the Gothenburg company Hart Aerospace to develop the electric aircraft models. Initially, it is smaller aircraft models that will start flying commercially, but they should over time be able to be scaled up to take more passengers.

"This industry didn't even exist 100 years ago. So you obviously have to start with the smaller aircraft and we're looking forward to that. It's a 30-seat flight, but the design should be able to be expanded to 50 seats," he said.
