Ferrets against rats, who will win the fight? This March, the city of Evry-Courcouronnes launches a rat control operation in the heart of the downtown district, where rodents are visible day and night.

In order to limit the use of chemicals, the city has called on the services of the company Rattila whose ecological methods use ferrets to reduce the proliferation of rats. "Little known, this ancient technique is nevertheless very effective," said the city hall in a statement. "Its use on the scale of an entire neighborhood is a first in France."

Annoying neighbors

For several weeks, the inhabitants of the city of Evry-Courcouronnes have noticed the presence of a large number of rats in the downtown district. Rodents no longer hesitate to emerge on the surface, under the gaze of passers-by. "In addition to the negative image that this presence can create, rats are likely to transmit diseases and weaken pipes," according to the city hall. The municipality has decided to supplement its regular rat control measures in buildings, by carrying out operations in public spaces.

Browsing technique

Since March 6 and until April, the company Rattila, intervenes, after a field study, on the entire district of the city center. It uses the technique of snooping which consists of "depositing a ferret in the galleries dug by rats to scare them away," said the town hall of Evry-Courcouronnes. The increase in the number of rats is due to the deposit of food waste on the ground, the poor maintenance of garbage rooms, open to the outside and the dilapidated sanitation networks. The town hall of the city has asked the company Rattila to carry out, in addition to its technical operations, actions to raise awareness among the general public. The respect of a few simple gestures such as not feeding animals in public spaces, depositing waste in closed bins, encouraging landlords to carry out the necessary work in garbage rooms, can help to sustainably reduce the rodent population in the neighborhood.
