COP28 President-designate visits Copenhagen to co-chair Climate Change Ministerial Meeting and network with global ministers and officials

The Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, the President-designate of COP28, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jaber, is visiting Copenhagen, Denmark, to co-chair the Ministerial Meeting on Climate Change with the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, President of the Conference of the Parties Sameh Shoukry, COP27, as this is the first high-level political meeting to be held after COP27, and aims to pave the way for the success of COP28, hosted by the UAE later this year, and follow up on the implementation of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, and the outcomes and outcomes of COP27.

The meeting, hosted by the Government of Denmark, will be attended by climate ministers and senior government officials from developed and developing countries including France, Japan, Maldives, Samoa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, along with Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Selwin Hart, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Climate Action.

Al Jaber will deliver the opening remarks during the meeting and chair a number of plenary sessions as part of its events, and will seek to support agreement on common goals for climate action, and encourage climate ministers to commit to implementing further action during 2023 across the themes of adaptation, mitigation, energy transition, international climate finance, and loss and damage.

Al Jaber is also holding a series of bilateral meetings in an effort to support the COP28 agenda and ensure that it is an inclusive and results-oriented conference, holding bilateral discussions with His Excellency Dan Jørgensen, Dan Jørgensen, Dan Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy, who is hosting the Ministerial Meeting, Her Excellency Grace Foe, Minister of Sustainability and Environment of Singapore, Her Excellency Jennifer Morgan, Minister of State and Special Envoy of Germany for International Climate Action, and His Excellency Muhammad Shahabuddin, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change of Bangladesh.

On this occasion, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber said: "In line with the vision of the UAE leadership, we are working to intensify efforts and enhance communication and cooperation with all stakeholders in preparation for the successful hosting of COP28, which is an important milestone in global climate action. As the global tally of progress on the Paris Agreement targets approaches, it is clear that we need to join forces to raise ambition and accelerate climate action."

Al Jaber added: "It is important that our joint efforts focus on ensuring that adequate means and resources are available to help all countries adapt to the impacts of climate impacts, and support their ambitions to mitigate these impacts, while ensuring a fair, logical, gradual and realistic transition in the energy sector. To achieve this, it will be necessary to provide concessional and appropriate financing for adaptation, loss and damage, and the technologies needed to support the deployment of clean energy sources."

The visit to Copenhagen is the latest in a global listening tour by His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber in his capacity as President-designate of COP28, which aims to meet and hear the views of a range of partners across governments, civil society, youth, the private sector, and representatives of international organizations and NGOs.

Al Jaber conducted a series of visits to India, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, and is planned to visit other countries, including a range of developing countries and small island States.
