There is protest: Around 700 people demonstrated against the planned reform of the Hessian assembly law in Frankfurt on Saturday. This was called for by the "Working Group against the Hessian Freedom of Assembly Act", which fears "far-reaching restrictions on the fundamental right to assembly and the associated expression of opinion" as a result of the draft law. In Wiesbaden, around 600 people protested against the reform a week ago. The Hessian Minister of the Interior, Peter Beuth (CDU), said that freedom of assembly was indispensable for democratic decision-making, but that protective mechanisms against targeted abuse had to be developed. Katharina Iskandar explains the dispute over the reform.

Pretty green: That Hesse has the largest percentage of green lung of all countries with 42 percent forested area: One of the facts about forests, which the Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein announced on Saturday. Another: 90,000 hectares of forest in Hesse have fallen victim to drought in the past five years. And if a politician, almost naturally, usually also reaps opposition, in the Königsteiner Forst there was none in response to Rhein's statement that the future of the forest was "in our hands". The CDU politician visited a tree-planting campaign by students of the Königsteiner girls' school St. Angela. This in turn was the prelude to a forest action week, in which 1500 volunteers want to participate nationwide. Florentine Fritzen reports.

Spring check: If you have a bike, you should pump it up regularly. Does that sound banal? Agrees. And obviously it has to be said. In any case, a bicycle dealer dictated this tip to my colleague Petra Kirchhoff so that she could pass it on to our readers. Even more advice for cyclists can be found in their report, which you can read online and in the print version on the consumer page of the Rhein-Main-Zeitung.

And in addition, the Hessian state government wants to introduce an IT security law into parliament on Tuesday to better protect the electronic state administration from cyber attacks +++ according to the Hessian Ministry of the Interior, the number of police candidates with a migration background is continuously increasing and that is a pleasing development +++ Anne Bohnenkamp-Renken, Director of the Free German Bishopric and the German Romantic Museum in Frankfurt, received the Hessian Culture Prize 2023 and Florian Balke reports on the award ceremony.

Warm greetings from the editors and a good start into the new week on Monday
