It is indeed a wolf who was found dead, trapped in a collar, on March 7, near Barjac (Gard), learned 20 Minutes from the services of the prefecture. Analyzes were conducted for about ten days to specify the species of this large canid, found by a "certified trapper". This detail was eagerly awaited, especially by animal advocates: the wolf is, indeed, a protected species.

According to the prefecture, the animal was a young female. It was, presumably, a gray wolf (Canis lupus). The autopsy revealed that this she-wolf was in poor physical condition (bone callus, brittle hair, no subcutaneous fat, tapeworm, etc.).

An investigation has been opened

A judicial investigation has been opened, to try to determine the circumstances of the death of this animal, says the prefecture. Further analyses were carried out. The results should be known in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, One Voice, which had little doubt that it was a she-wolf, said it intended to file a complaint, for "destruction of protected species" and "violation of the regulations governing the practice of trapping". "Although snares are still allowed by law, especially to trap foxes, they are still cruel instruments," the association wrote. Since they are laid out in nature, it is impossible to prevent other animals from coming into contact with them. »
