THE ESSENTIALS

  • The United Nations estimates that the international agreement on the export of cereals from Ukraine, which has helped alleviate a global food crisis since last summer, should continue as it is beyond March 18, even if Russia has halved the duration or 60 days.
  • Lithuania has called the Russian mercenary group Wagner a "terrorist organization" for its activities in Ukraine, where it is fighting alongside the Russian military. Wagner is present in Bakhmut, a city that Moscow's troops have been trying to take since the summer at the cost of heavy losses and where the Ukrainians are seeking to "buy time" to prepare for a counter-offensive that they believe should not be long in coming.
  • The United States announced Tuesday that it had summoned the Russian ambassador in Washington to the State Department to express its "strong objection" after the "unsafe and unprofessional interception that caused the downfall" of an American drone in the Black Sea.

Hello everyone. As every day, the editorial staff of 20 Minutes is mobilized to give you the latest information on the conflict. Since yesterday, tension has risen again between the United States and Russia. According to the Americans, a Russian Su-27 fighter jet "intercepted and rammed" an American Reaper drone over the Black Sea and caused it to fall, an act described as "reckless" by the White House. While the war in Ukraine raises fears of escalation, the United States has since announced that it has summoned the Russian ambassador in Washington to the State Department to express its "strong objection" to the incident.
