Turkish authorities announced on Wednesday, the death and loss of a number of people in the cities of Adiyaman and Şanlıurfa, following strong floods hitting the south of the country.

Videos showed heavy rains and floods sweeping Turkey's Şanlıurfa province, and floodwaters dragging a large number of cars with people inside.

Salih Ayhan, governor of Şanlıurfa, told state broadcaster TRT Khabar: "Four people have been killed and rescue efforts are now underway in the province, including in rural areas."

"Authorities fear the death toll could rise," he said, citing "unusually" heavy rains.

The private Turkish news agency Demiroren had earlier quoted Numan Khatiboglu, the governor of Adyman, as saying that the floodwaters, which followed heavy rains, washed away a container house, in the "Tut" area of the province, killing one person, and there are a large number of missing people who were withdrawn by floodwaters in Şanlıurfa and Adyaman.

The death toll is likely to rise as floods hit several provinces, including Adiyaman, Gaziantep, Kilis, Mardin and Kahramanmaraş.

This comes after two devastating earthquakes struck southern Turkey on the sixth of last February, resulting in thousands of deaths and the destruction of thousands of homes and infrastructure, as the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management announced that the death toll due to the earthquake disaster reached 47,975 people.
