The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution does not currently classify the climate protection movement Last Generation as extremist. "Currently, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of the Federal Government and the Länder does not see sufficient evidence to assess the climate movement Last Generation as extremist," said President Thomas Haldenwang the editorial network Germany. This assessment is not changed by the fact that activists of the last generation sometimes act criminally. At the same time, Haldenwang stressed: "The Office for the Protection of the Constitution takes a close look every day to see how the situation develops."

Last week, Der Spiegel reported that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution was currently investigating whether it had to observe the climate protection activists. The office had already created a corresponding test case more than half a year ago, it said. Haldenwang said he was "forbidden to talk about test cases."

However, the President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution pointed out in general and without reference to the last generation that a test case is a standardized procedure. Such a step is necessary so that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution can even begin an examination. This is not automatically associated with a qualitative assessment.

The group, founded at the end of 2021, blocked motorway access roads in Berlin for the first time on 24 January last year. This was followed with interruptions almost daily by such blockades as well as protests in museums, stadiums, oil pipelines or airports. Among other things, the activists are calling for a general move away from fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Many politicians criticize the group's actions. For example, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) called the actions "extremely dangerous".
