Frankfurt-based utility Süwag has announced that it will reduce its basic supply tariff for electricity by around 1 percent and for gas by 15 percent as of April 20. Tariffs for heat pumps and storage heaters are also to become cheaper. This means savings of several hundred euros a year for consumers, Süwag calculated. For example, with an average consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours, the electricity bill will fall by 325 euros per year, while the annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours of gas will be 825 euros cheaper. Initially, taxpayers benefit more from this than individual customers, because the tariffs are still a few cents above the price limit of 40 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity or 12 cents for gas, of which the state assumes most of the costs.

If the energy markets continue to develop as before, all other tariffs are to be reduced on 1 July. According to Süwag, "due to the still fluctuating prices on the wholesale markets, it is currently not yet possible to make a binding statement".

Meanwhile, Süwag customers are helping themselves out of the high costs in a different way: Gas consumption in the area of the Süwag network operator Syna fell by twelve percent last year compared to the average value of the previous three years. Households saved six percent on electricity compared to 2021. Of course, the comparatively mild temperatures also played a role, says Andreas Berg, Managing Director of Syna GmbH. "Nevertheless, we see a positive development in the area of energy savings."
