A grocery store owner from Mosul, northern Iraq, surprised his customers by burning their debt book before the holy month of Ramadan.

Jurist and grocery owner Moayad Al-Mozan published - through his Facebook account - two pictures of him while he was burning the debt book, and commented on it that he would not claim anyone for the money he owed, on the occasion of the month of Ramadan, which begins after about 10 days.

Al-Mozan said in press statements, "We are in intermittent days in which we seek to get closer to God Almighty, and I am in my hands to forgive customers' debts and forgive them money before the holy month," stressing that he did not expect the image to spread in this way on social media.

The Al-Mozan initiative was widely appreciated by the pioneers of the communication sites, and they considered it a humanitarian gesture for the owner of the grocer and his sense of responsibility, especially as Iraq is going through a critical economic period, calling on the able-bodied merchants and shop owners to follow his example.

God willing.. not anyone can do it, so the Qur’an said it explicitly:

If he did this with forgiveness, pardon, and satisfaction;

He relieved anguish and freed himself from the fire of hell while he was alive.

Poverty rates in Iraq...a significant increase

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Planning, Iraq witnessed a remarkable increase in poverty rates as a result of the economic and political crisis, and poverty reached about 25% of the population, while the number of poor people is estimated at about 11 million out of the country's population of 42 million.

Muthanna (southwest) leads the poorest governorates with a rate of 52%, followed by Diwaniyah and Dhi Qar in the south with a rate of 49%.

According to official data, nearly 3 million Iraqis receive monthly financial grants from the government.

They are out of 9 million who deserve aid, and the government cannot provide it to all of them due to the poor allocations.
