A total of 41 vehicles were involved in the mass collision about 25 km west of Budapest. According to the agencies, one man died, 39 people were injured, two in danger of life, while twelve are in serious condition. Another 25 suffered minor injuries. Among the injured also 10 children. Police are examining the circumstances of the chain collision.

Ambulances transported the injured to hospitals in Gyor, western Hungary, Budapest, Tatabanya and Szekesfehervar. Rescuers arrived at the scene with four helicopters and 16 ambulances. The accident may have been caused by a localized dust storm that suddenly reduced visibility, according to a post on the social media page of the company that operates the Hungarian highways. Traffic resumed in the direction of Budapest after midnight on Sunday and at 5:15 in the direction of Gyor, but investigations into the causes are still ongoing.
