A never-ending day... The Israeli army said Sunday it shot dead before dawn three Palestinians who opened fire on a military position near Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank. The incident took place at the Surra-Jit dam, in an area under Israeli security control.

"Gunmen opened fire on [Israeli] soldiers at a military post adjacent to the Jit junction," the IDF said in a statement. A fourth man surrendered and is being held for questioning, the army said, adding that no Israeli soldiers were injured.

Already 95 words this year

Since the beginning of the year, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has claimed the lives of 81 Palestinians, 12 Israeli civilians and a policeman, as well as a Ukrainian woman, according to an AFP count. On Friday, two Palestinians were killed in the West Bank, the first by soldiers, the second by a Jewish settler.

Repeated calls for calm from the UN and many foreign chancelleries seem to resound in the desert. Also on Friday, during a quick visit to Israel, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin insisted on the need for "de-escalation."
