He said that Washington would conduct a so-called proxy attack.

“The United States is providing assistance in terms of transferring materials, weapons and intelligence needed to plan an attack,” Ritter said in an interview with the Judging Freedom YouTube channel, discussing the possibility of American assistance to Ukraine in attacks on Crimea. 

Earlier, a former Pentagon adviser, Colonel Douglas McGregor, said that the direct participation of the United States in attacks on Crimea would provoke a military conflict with Russia.

It was also reported that Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, promised to arrange a “hot season” in Crimea.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin does not see the circumstances under which the “return” of Crimea to Ukraine is possible.

Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014: the majority of residents voted for reunification with Russia.
