Sultan Al Jaber: UAE is committed to deepening cooperation with the United Nations in climate action

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and President-designate of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP<>), concluded his visit to the United States by meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and held close discussions with other key actors involved in climate action at the United Nations.
During his meeting with Guterres, Al Jaber affirmed the UAE's commitment to deepening cooperation with the United Nations on climate action, in light of preparations for the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), which will be hosted by the UAE from November 12 to December 2023, <> in Dubai.
For his part, Guterres expressed his deep appreciation for the cooperation of the UAE presidency of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and accepted the invitation of the President-designate to attend the work of the Conference in the UAE.
Al Jaber identified key priorities for the UAE's Conference of the Parties (COP28): mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to the effects of climate change, loss and damage from climate change impacts, financing climate action projects, and process innovation; in this regard, the two sides discussed the urgent need to close the financing gap and keep the goal of reducing global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in place.
For her part, Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, stressed the need for coherence of agendas and outcomes of the work of the United Nations General Assembly and the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and to strengthen each other's work.
Sultan Al Jaber met with Chaba Kuroshi, President of the United Nations General Assembly, where the President-designate of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) highlighted the UAE's desire to work closely with Member States to present a version of the Conference of the Parties that includes all stakeholders and diversity, and works to enhance accountability towards commitments and the implementation of solutions, and to reaffirm this commitment, Al Jaber briefed the Permanent Delegates of the Member States of the European Union, on the progress made towards the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and potential areas of cooperation.
In a meeting with UNICEF Executive Director Katherine Russell, Al Jaber noted the importance of meeting the needs and priorities of children and youth at COP28.
Al Jaber also met with Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to discuss how COP28 prioritizes fragile and vulnerable communities, which are most affected by the impacts of climate change.
Al Jaber met with Dr. Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, in the presence of Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State, and Lana Nusseibeh; the two sides discussed how to put gender equality at the heart of climate action and COP28.
