Chinese parliament approves Li Qiang as new prime minister

China's parliament on Saturday approved Li Qiang as the new prime minister at the parliament's annual meeting.

Li Qiang received 2936,<> votes to three, with eight abstentions.

Li Qiang, the former chairman of the Shanghai Communist Party, will replace Li Keqiang, who will retire during the session of the National People's Congress (NPC) that ends on Monday after serving two five-year terms.

Chinese President Xi Jinping nominated Li Qiang for the post earlier in the day to run the world's second-largest economy.

Li Qiang, 63, is a close ally of the president. He served as Xi's chief of staff from 2004 to 2007 when Xi was party secretary in eastern China's Zhejiang province.
