The shooting at the Jehovah's Witnesses church began at 19 p.m. A resident in the area filmed the images with a mobile phone from the top of a balcony and said he heard at least four bursts of fire, interspersed with pauses of about twenty seconds or a minute. Only when "I looked more closely and saw a person running frantically from the ground floor to the first floor of Jehovah's Witnesses did I realize what was happening. Initially, I did not realize. I filmed it with my mobile phone and only through the zoom I realized that someone was shooting. At first I thought it was funny, because I thought, okay, maybe a teenager is shooting around with a blank gun. When I realized that people were dying, or were seriously injured, the world fell on me," says the witness of the carnage that took place on Deelboege Street. The street is located near one of the main arteries of the Gross Borstel district, near the suburb of Alsterdorf, halfway between the city center of Hamburg and the main airport.

The Jehovah's Witnesses community is in shock, the chancellor spoke of a "brutal attack" and rallied around "the victims and their loved ones".
