The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission announced on the 9th that it had arrested former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Muhyiddin, the top leader of the opposition coalition, on suspicion of corruption.

According to local media, Muhyiddin is suspected of diverting funds from vendors to his political party during his tenure as prime minister over coronavirus-related economic aid measures.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission announced on the 9th that it had arrested former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Muhyiddin, who served as prime minister until 2021, on suspicion of corruption.

He has since been released on bail but is expected to face charges as early as Thursday.

According to local media, Muhyiddin is suspected of diverting money from his traders to his political party during his tenure as prime minister over coronavirus-related economic aid measures.

Mr. Muhyiddin is the leader of the opposition coalition "National League" and won the second seat after the coalition of political parties led by Prime Minister Anwar in the general election in November last year, competing for the seat of prime minister.

Since his inauguration, Anwar has stepped up his stance to denounce the wrongdoings of his past administrations.

"I am innocent and an abuse of power," Muhyiddin said in a statement after his arrest.

Elections are scheduled to be held in several states in Malaysia this year, and Mr. Muhyiddin's arrest could be a blow to the opposition.

In 2018, former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib was arrested and indicted in a corruption case involving sovereign wealth funds, and a prison sentence was finalized last year.
