Hessian investigators arrested a young man on Wednesday who is said to have planned a terrorist attack with a fully automatic firearm in Frankfurt. As the Frankfurt public prosecutor's office announced, the investigation was initiated after information from a foreign intelligence service in the summer of 2022.

The now eighteen-year-old from the Hochtaunuskreis is said to have researched unconventional explosive devices and obtained a "long stabbing weapon". During a search of his apartment, pictures related to the "Islamic State" were found, which alone could not substantiate the suspicion of preparing the attack.

Further undercover investigations revealed, according to prosecutors, that the young man reversed the attack plans and instead wanted to travel to Iraq to join IS. Shortly before the Austrian border, officers of the Frankfurt police arrested him.
