  • In Kiev, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected for his third trip to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, notably to discuss the extension of the agreement with Russia on Ukrainian grain exports.

07:25: Wagner says he conquered all "the eastern part" of Bakhmut

The head of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner said Wednesday that his troops had taken "the entire eastern part" of the city of Bakhmut, the epicenter of fighting in eastern Ukraine.

"The Wagner units took the entire eastern part of Bakhmut, everything east of the Bakhmutka River," Prigozhin said in an audio message released by his press service.

The Ukrainian president warned Wednesday that in the event of the capture of Bakhmut, the epicenter of particularly deadly fighting for months, the Russian army would have "a clear way" to advance in eastern Ukraine.

After Bakhmut, the Russians "could go further. They could go to Kramatorsk, they could go to Sloviansk, the way would be clear" for them "to other cities in Ukraine," Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with CNN. Despite the Ukrainians' fierce defense, Russia vowed to fight until Bakhmut was captured, calling the city crucial to its offensive in Ukraine.
