Whole neighborhoods are completely destroyed and only ruins remain of several buildings and apartment buildings.

The devastation in the town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine is extensive after months of bloody and protracted fighting for the town described as symbolically important.

Ukrainian forces defending the city are under heavy pressure.

According to several media outlets, Russian troops are slowly advancing from the northern side of the city and heavy fighting is also taking place just east of the city, according to Reuters.

There are now, among other things, street battles on the outskirts of Bachmut, says deputy mayor Oleksandr Marchenko in an interview with the BBC on Saturday.

He says there are probably 4,000-4,500 civilians left in the city, which before the full-scale Russian invasion was home to around 70,000 people.

He says that civilians still remaining are trying to take shelter in shelters and that there is a lack of running water, gas and electricity.

An anonymous Ukrainian commander told the AP news agency that it has become too risky for civilians to leave the city except on foot.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed in a recently published video that Bachmut is "practically surrounded" by Russian forces.

ISW: Can prepare retreat

Ukrainian forces may prepare to leave Bachmut, writes the American think tank ISW, Institute for the study of war, in its latest report.

The analysis is made after the information on Friday that Ukraine blew up two bridges into the city.

One across the river in the north-eastern part and one along the road towards Khromove just west of the city.

ISW writes that the controlled explosions indicate that the Ukrainian military is trying to prevent Russian soldiers from passing and advancing via Bachmut.

Ukraine: Retains control

This week, Oleksander Rodnyanskyi, an adviser to President Zelenskyi, said that Ukrainian forces could retreat from their positions in Bakhmut - if necessary.

- Our military considers all decisions.

So far, they have been able to maintain control of the city, Alexander Rodnyansky told CNN.
