Biden and Scholz vow to continue supporting Ukraine

US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine, as two of Kiev's closest allies met at the White House on Friday to discuss the Russian war.

In a brief statement issued after the talks, the White House said Biden and Scholz spoke of "ongoing efforts to provide security, humanitarian, economic and political assistance to Ukraine and the importance of continued global solidarity with the people of Ukraine" along with "other global issues."

Scholz has said several times that he believes his government needs to keep up with the Biden administration's moves to send military aid to Ukraine.

Biden called Scholz's massive rise in defense spending and his decision to stop using Russian fossil fuels historic decisions.

It was the German chancellor's second visit to the White House in nearly 15 months since taking office.
His first visit to Washington was in early February last year, and Ukraine was the main focus of the talks at the time as well.

Scholz said in English that joint support for Ukraine last year was very important "and it is very important now that we send the message that we will continue to do this as long as necessary" and praised the cooperation with the United States, saying: "I really appreciate the very good cooperation between us."

Following this, Scholz and Biden held a closed-door meeting that lasted for more than an hour. The two sides did not hold a press conference after the meeting.
