The telecommunications sector has shown this week in Barcelona, where a new edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) has been held, that it is more necessary and alive than ever.

It has presented and announced initiatives that show that it is prepared to lead the new digital era, and it has done so together and under the leadership of the GSMA, the global association that brings together the largest telecommunications operator groups and small independent reach operators. and which since 2022 has been chaired by José María Álvarez-Pallete, president of Telefónica.

During Mobile, the GSMA has launched Open Gateway, a project that illuminates a new era for the sector, in which Telefónica is involved, which is transforming its networks to turn them into interoperable and programmable platforms through open, universal and standardized APIs that enables a new wave of innovation for developers and creators of digital services.

A new world ready to take advantage of all the opportunities brought by the technological revolution.

Open Gateway is an industry-wide initiative, announced in Barcelona, during MWC, and with the first Spanish president in GSMA history, highlighting the relevant role Spain plays in the digital age.

"GSMA Open Gateway unites telecommunications companies, industry, big technology companies and developers to create the digital future together," said Álvarez-Pallete during Mobile.

He added: "This project will create a new world of opportunities for the industry. It will be a catalyst for all these advanced services to realize their potential and reach a critical mass. And it will generate choice and bring value to consumers. This is the ambition of the GSMA Open Gateway. Establish a common layer to expose the capabilities of the network. Transform the entire ecosystem for the benefit of all."

The future is the present

The proposals exhibited by the different companies at the MWC have shown that the future is present.

We live in a world marked by the web3, the metaverse, quantum computing, AI, holographic communications, the Open Gateway.

A new paradigm in which Europe needs to define a clear strategic autonomy policy in order not to be left behind.

This strategic autonomy is based on three large sectors: defense, energy and, of course, telecommunications.

Without a competitive telecommunications sector and fair regulation, Europe will never achieve full strategic autonomy.

The telco sector must play an essential role, and for this a change in the rules of the game is necessary to allow us to compete on equal terms.

The new digital age needs standards for the digital age, not for analog times.

Standards for the 21st century.

It is a moment of cooperation and public-private collaboration.

The consultation that the European Commission has launched regarding 'fair share' and how to draw the rules of the new digital world is a clear sign that this is how the Administration and regulators see it, and that things must change to guarantee access for citizens to fast and secure networks.

The solution is through collaboration.

There is no other way.

It is time to join forces and take action, to propose a strategic dialogue to achieve lasting solutions.

Europe cannot wait, because it is not the future of telecommunications that is at stake, but the future of the new world in which we already live.

We must establish a fair regulation in Europe, not a Europe of privileges.

This new regulatory approach, key to having a regulatory framework adjusted to the era of fiber and not copper, will also be decisive in giving a boost to the consolidation of the telco sector in Europe and Spain.

Telecommunications are protagonists now and will be even more so in that digital future that is present.

The launch of Open Gateway, the leadership and capacity for joint action of the GSMA or the launch of the European consultation to define the future model of regulation of the digital world demonstrate all the good that is to come.

And the telco sector is more than ready to lead this new paradigm, with Europe at the forefront of the world.
