"Aleks, Aleks, come my love, come, beautiful little dog." More than three weeks after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that devastated southern Turkey and Syria, rescuers managed to extract alive a dog that remained under the rubble of a collapsed building in Antioch.

Aleks, a handsome mestizo with lively eyes, was trapped for 23 days between some concrete slabs that, collapsing, had formed a pit. It is now in good condition despite the weight lost.

To raise the alarm, reports the Turkish agency Anadolu, was the owner of the dog who had heard noises coming from under the rubble and had recognized Aleks' barking. The rescue teams sent by the municipality of Seydisehir in the central province of Konya and HAYTAP, the Turkish association for the protection of animals, intervened promptly and, as soon as they started working, they heard barking and finally managed to bring Aleks back to the surface. The dog was delivered to Haytap and was taken to Antioch to be cared for and returned to its owner.

A miraculous rescue, said a HAYTAP volunteer.
