Representing President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, participated yesterday in the work of the "Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group Summit", which was held under the patronage of President Ilham Aliyev in the capital Baku, with the participation of a number of heads of state and government and representatives of more than 70 countries and UN and international organizations, to discuss the post-recovery response from the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the occasion of heading the UAE delegation to the summit, His Highness the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah said that the UAE's participation in the summit comes within the framework of its keenness to emphasize the values of solidarity and concerted efforts towards global issues, and to coordinate positions on the international arena to enhance international security and stability, and achieve the aspirations of peoples for sustainable development.

His Highness added that the UAE's approach is based on the principles of good neighbourliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and respect for their sovereignty and territorial integrity.

His Highness pointed out that the UAE, under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and based on its humanitarian role towards friendly countries and peoples during the Covid-19 pandemic, has implemented many humanitarian initiatives, extended a helping hand to countries around the world, without discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and worked hard with regional and international organizations to respond quickly to reduce the repercussions of the pandemic on all humanity.

His Highness noted that the post-Covid-19 recovery period requires international solidarity and joint coordination among member states to continue the recovery process to reduce the negative effects of the pandemic and stimulate economic and development growth.

His Highness the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah expressed his thanks to the government and people of the Republic of Azerbaijan for the good organization, warm reception, and its role during its presidency of the "Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement", in addition to the initiatives launched by President Ilham Aliyev, which contributed to coordinating efforts among member states and strengthening global solidarity to confront the Covid-19 pandemic through collective action and cooperation at all levels.

The summit opened with a keynote speech by the President of Azerbaijan, during which he welcomed the participants to the summit, followed by a minute of silence for the victims of the recent earthquake in the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of Turkey.

In his speech, Ilham Aliyev reviewed the achievements of the Movement during Azerbaijan's presidency for the period 2019-2022, which was extended unanimously for another year until the end of 2023, as it took the initiative to mobilize global efforts to confront the Covid-19 pandemic by establishing the Non-Aligned Movement Working Group to develop a database that was used by the World Health Organization as a reference point to identify the needs of the Movement's member states to address the pandemic. He stressed that Azerbaijan has provided financial and humanitarian support related to Corona to countries, mostly from the Non-Aligned Movement, through bilateral channels or the World Health Organization.

According to the Middle East News Agency, discussions during the summit's plenary session focused on the repercussions faced by countries in the post-COVID-19 period, and highlighted the importance and how to exploit technology to overcome these repercussions in the wake of the pandemic. The summit will discuss the measures taken by governments to protect their citizens from the repercussions of the pandemic on economic conditions, especially working to discuss ways to enhance the recovery of the economic sector after the pandemic.

Attendees will also discuss the development of multilateral dialogue, expanding cooperation in the face of the ongoing impact of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as growing challenges and threats to international security and stability.

The summit is held in contact group format with the participation of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, based on geographical representation, given the membership of 120 countries in the Non-Aligned Movement.

Azerbaijan has held the chairmanship of the Movement since 2019 for three years, and the Non-Aligned Movement has made great efforts in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Movement also organized a virtual summit of the Movement in May 2020 on the topic of combating the pandemic, at the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan.
