British Foreign Secretary Cleverley: Falkland Islands belong to the UK

"The Falkland Islands are British," Cleverly said.

The British diplomat made such a statement in response to the proposal of his Argentine counterpart Santiago Cafiero to resume negotiations on the ownership of the islands.

"The inhabitants of the islands have the right to decide their future - they have chosen to remain a British Overseas Territory," the British minister added.

Earlier, Argentina proposed to transfer the negotiations on the problems of the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands to the UN platform.

Moscow also called on Argentina and Britain to resume direct dialogue on the Malvinas problem.

At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev called on Britain to “get off the Malvinas Islands” and return them to the Argentines.
