THE ESSENTIALS

  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine will be at the heart of the session of the UN Human Rights Council that opens on Monday, culminating in the publication of an investigation into war crimes committed in the country.
  • Russia on Saturday accused the West of having "destabilized" the G20 Finance summit in India by trying to adopt by "blackmail" a joint communiqué on Ukraine, which did not happen because of differences.
  • China has called on Moscow and Kiev to hold peace talks and rejected any use of nuclear weapons, in a document released Friday, the first anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict. Volodymyr Zelensky deemed it "necessary" to "work" with Beijing and said he planned an upcoming meeting with his Chinese counterpart. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, for his part, considered that the Chinese document was "not a peace plan".

06h20 : Welcome to this new Live

Hello everyone. As every day, the editorial staff of 20 Minutes is mobilized to give you the latest information on the conflict. This Monday opens the session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). One year after the beginning of the conflict, it will be at the heart of discussions, culminating in the publication of an investigation into war crimes committed in Ukraine. Nearly 150 senior leaders, including the heads of French, American, Chinese, Iranian and Ukrainian diplomacy, will speak by Thursday, a record. Moscow is expected to send its Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday. Despite calls from NGOs, however, it is not certain that diplomats will leave the room at the time of his speech as they did last year for its leader Sergei Lavrov, who intervened by videoconference.
